"Mercy married Benjamin McGhie immediately after her first husband, William Ripley, died.
At some point around 1857 or'58, Mercy and her new husband were charged with poisoning William Ripley. Apparently the Rlpleys brought the case before the law because of the strange circumstances of William's death and Mercy's immediate remarriage. Mercy and Dr. McGhie were cleared of the charges, and proceeded to live respectable lives in the Elgin area. References to this case would most likely be found in Brockville, ONT papers during 1857-8. "
