Martha Elizabeth MacNeil

MacNEIL, Martha Elizabeth 'Pat' - 93 Halifax, died May 17, 2001, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. Born in Pittsfield, Mass., in 1907, she was a daughter of the late Louis and Katie (Merkel) Robinson. Martha married Hibbert McNeil in 1926 and moved to Nova Scotia. She owned and operated a beauty parlour and hair dressing school in Middleton, Annapolis Co. for many years. During the war, she worked as an inspector in a defense plant in Massachusetts, USA. She was a graduate of Provincial Normal College, Truro. She taught in various schools in Annapolis County. Upon retirement, she became a respected antique dealer. Martha lived most of her life in Middleton and Wilmot Station. She was a member of St. John's United Church. Middleton. Always interested in community affairs, she was successful in bringing regional libraries to Annapolis County. She was also active in the Wilmot Garden Club. She was manager of Beauty Councilor, Past President of Middleton Women's Institute and the Wilmot Women's Institute. In 1983, she moved to Halifax to be closer to her family.

Surviving are daughters, Elizabeth Downs, Halifax; Suzanne McNeil, Bowen Island, B.C.; grandchildren, William (Shelley) Downs, Lower Sackville; Robert Downs, Halifax; Patricia Downs, Halifax; Cameron Knowlton, Calgary, Alta.; great-grandchildren, Jamie, Bailee, Jesse, Jessica; sister-in-law, Joyce McNeil; several nieces and nephews. She will be missed by her family, friends and her companion of 13 years, Pepper. She was predeceased by her husband, Hibbert P. MeNeil; brother, Kenneth Robinson; sister, Miriam in infancy. Memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday, May 27, in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton. A reception will follow the memorial service at the funeral home. Burial in Wilmot Cemetery, Wilmot. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia, SPCA or charity of choice.
